The weather was uncharacteristically kind to us for the Ceiriog Valley Sheepdog Trials and Show on 26 and 27 August. The Local Class started off the Trials competition on Friday, won by Alun Jones of Selattyn. The Novice Class followed and was won by Arwyn Davies of Bryneglwys. The Open Trials took place on Saturday, welcoming competitors from near and far, including handlers from as far as Germany and Poland. The fascinating spectacle of watching the determination and mutual understanding displayed in the teamwork between dog and handler resulted with Aled Owen of Ty Nant, Corwen winning the title with Glesni. The Sheep Competition was a great success with a large number of entries and some very fine exhibits. It’s so encouraging to see the young handlers competing with their stock. Congratulations to Edwards Bros of Glashirfryn, Llanrhaeadr Y.M on winning the trophy for Overall Interbreed Champion.
The Hand and Machine Shearing competitions always draw a vibrant crowd and the first fleece was spun deftly on an old spinning wheel at the Garth Organic Garden stall. It’s a great thing to see a local selected for the Welsh Hand Shearing team.
Smiles were abound at the Companion Dog Show with a Russian Black Terrier winning Best in Show with its owner Shirley Hockenhull.
The Horse Show field was bouncing with life as always. Congratulations to the following: Overall Show In Hand Champion and the Selattyn Cup winner Evie Lake; Young Handler overall winner and the Malcolm McGowan Trophy recipient Phoebe Cook; Age 14 & Under Gymkhana Champion, Emily Martin-Jones; Open Gymkhana Champion, Hannah Owen and the Dave Evans Trophy winner Ffion Roberts who the judges chose as the Child who Most Encapsulates the Spirit of the Show.
A display of fine vintage tractors, Alastair Gilchrist’s Farriery display, wool spinning, apple pressing demonstrations and the Young Farmers’ lively stand with various competitions to take part in were all enjoyed by young and old alike along with all the lovely crafts and produce for sale on the stalls.
It was a fantastic day with a record footfall on the gate, and heart-warming to see the community come together and welcome so many from further afield so we would like to say a big thank you to all the visitors who came along to help create that and for joining in the fun with such enthusiasm.
So many people work incredibly hard to make this a great day for everyone. We would be lost without all our wonderful volunteers who give so generously of their time so, on behalf of the Society; an enormous heartfelt thank you to all those good people. We can only put on the show year after year as a team.
